Students and Teachers of Gateway attend University of Nottingham Summer Camp

Gateway College in collaboration with the University of Nottingham – Malaysia Campus (UNMC) organized a Summer Programme for the third consecutive year at the UNMC during the August vacation. Ninety Two Students & Teachers from Gateway Colleges Rajagiriya, Dehiwala, Kandy and Negombo and Gateway Graduate School had a time of learning and fun this year too.

The 7 day programme was designed to give participants exposure to a diversity of knowledge and experience in life on campus in addition to being challenged with academics. On successful completion, both students and teachers received certificates from the University that will add value whether they study further in UNMC or elsewhere in future.

This year 73 students had the opportunity to attend sessions at three different faculties. The Faculty of Engineering had practical projects planned to introduce students to the areas of Chemical,Civil, Mechanical, Material & Manufacturing and Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Participants had an exciting hands-on learning experience during these sessions.

The Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences challenged students to think strategically. Discussions on Financial & Trading Strategies and Choice Marketing in Economics were both interactive and interesting.

A peek into Psychology, Robotics and the study of Microbes was yet another memorable experience for the students at the Faculty of Science.

Special training for teachers at the Faculty of Education:

The Management at Gateway who invest in staff development sponsored 18 teachers to attend the specially designed programme at the Faculty of Education. Students following the Teacher Training Diploma at Gateway Graduate School also joined these sessions.

The teachers were divided into two groups to follow courses in Educational Leadership and Behavioral Management.The Educational Leadership Programme was typically for school teachers with leadership positions and those identified as part of the school’s succession plan with significant responsibility for strategic decision-making.

The Behavioral Management programme was aimed at helping professionals within the education field to develop research-informed knowledge and skills to manage emotional and behavioural issues at school, classroom and individual levels.

Fun and entertainment:

Participants were also given opportunities to visit places of interest and have a taste of life in Malaysia. Witnessing a cultural show, tasting traditional Malaysian cuisine and hours of shopping were among the highlights during the two days of leisure.

Participants returned with a wealth of experience, memories to treasure and many new friends.

British Masters in Education commences for the first time in Sri Lanka at Gateway

Gateway Graduate School commenced a new British Masters in Education that is delivered by the fly-in faculty of the University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus (UNMC). The course, offered in Sri Lanka for the very first time, is conducted on a part time basis over 18 - 24 months. All teaching is carried out by the UNMC faculty on a face-to-face basis at the Gateway Graduate School during their visits to Sri Lanka during school vacations in April, August and December.

Dr. Lucy Bailey, Assistant Professor, School of Education, Dr.Maria Kaparou, Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Mrs. Nelum Senadira, Head of the Gateway Graduate School and Ms. Hasini Gajadeera, Head of Faculty of Education GGS along with the MA students.

The first batch of candidates included both local and international teachers. The majority of the international candidates included teachers from the Maldives. Dr. Lucy Bailey, Assistant Professor, School of Education of the UNMC who was present in Sri Lanka for the inauguration, assisted the participants in the enrollment process. Following their enrolment, students have free global access to all Nottingham University libraries, online resources and the Virtual learning environment.

The first module - 'Leading Learning' was conducted by Dr.Maria Kaparou, Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences at UNMC. During her stay, Dr. Kaparou assisted the students with tutorials on a one to one basis in addition to providing a series of lectures. The module is designed to meet the interests and requirements of leaders at all levels who aspire to develop and improve their leadership and management practices. The classes were held at the Gateway Graduate School, Colombo for a period of one week during the April school holidays.

Students who complete the Edexcel Professional Diploma in Teaching and the Edexcel Professional Diploma in Advanced Teaching are eligible to enroll in the Masters programme. These Diplomas can be completed at the Gateway Graduate Schools in Colombo and Kandy over 2 years. The MA in Education is also open to graduates who do not have a teaching qualification enabling them to add value to themselves by obtaining a world renowned Masters teaching qualification. Gateway’s partnership with UNMC enables candidates to complete the MA in Education in Sri Lanka at a fraction of the cost of studying overseas. The successful graduates will be invited by UNMC to attend their graduation ceremony in Malaysia. University of Nottingham is ranked among the top 10 UK universities and within the top 1% of all universities worldwide.

Gateway has signed up with NDB Bank to provide an exciting new student loan scheme that would ease the burden of students and parents. The low interest scheme is designed in a way where the students are required to pay interest only during the study period and pay back the capital once qualified when they could easily find employment. With a total payback period of 8 years the loan scheme is most attractive. This very first intake consisted of students who were assisted by the NDB Bank.
